  28. This is NASA Headline News For Thursday, April 12.....
  29.  
  30. Kennedy Space Center ground crews last night removed the 
  31. auxiliary power unit controller for return to the manufacturer.  
  32. However, test results have cleared the computer of any problem.  
  33. It appears a pulse control valve opening in an auxiliary power 
  34. unit did not fully close--allowing extra hydrazine to flow into 
  35. the turbine causing an overspeed condition.  During the 
  36. countdown, the preset launch criteria sensed the condition.  The 
  37. computerized system performed automatically as it should and held 
  38. the count.
  39.  
  40. The STS-31 launch date will be determined once it is clear 
  41. exactly what work is required.  Estimates continue to be 
  42. approximately ten to fourteen days.  Announcement of a target 
  43. date will be discussed later today.
  44.  
  45. As engineers have identified the circuitry in the 15-pound 
  46. controller is not the problem, the mission management teams 
  47. scheduled removal of the APU for necessary work to be completed 
  48. by this weekend.  A hot-firing test is planned for next week.  
  49. Consideration will be given to recharge the Hubble Space 
  50. Telescope batteries while remaining in the payload bay.  
  51.  
  52. The payload bay doors are closed but will be opened later this 
  53. afternoon to install detectors to monitor any possible 
  54. contaminants during turnaround activities.  And, for protection 
  55. against the weather as well as access to the payload bay, the 
  56. rotating service structure remains alongside the Discovery.

  58. Propellants have been drained from the external tanks as well as 
  59. cryogenics from the fuel cells.  And, the five-member crew has 
  60. returned to Johnson Space Center to conduct practice runs in the 
  61. shuttle simulator.

  65. The Human Performance Research Lab at the Ames Research Center is 
  66. expected to be up and running by January 1992.  It will be the 
  67. first research facility designed to study the human role in 
  68. advanced aviation and prolonged space travel.  During yesterday's 
  69. groundbreaking ceremonies, Center Director Dale Compton said it 
  70. will help scientists answer questions and meet space goals like a 
  71. lunar outpost, a Mars expedition or the National Aero-Space 
  72. Plane.

  119.     No activities were performed on Wednesday.  Today the
  120.     payload bay doors will be reopened and preps for restarting
  121.     HST battery charging will be active.

  126.     Payload preps for orbiter rollover to the VAB were completed
  127.     Wednesday and the payload bay doors were closed third shift
